For my nightmare and dreams assignment I choose to do a clown with a skeleton face which represents death. I choose to make it a clown to make it more scary and interesting. The forest around the clown represents darkness and loneliness which is a often nightmare that I tend to have. I drew the whole art piece with pen. To help with shading I used a damp Qutip to smear the ink in order to get the shading the way I wanted it within my work. This art piece took me a lot of time especially the trees and the forest itself and the shading around them.

I concentrated my work on expressing patterns and in depth details within my shoe design. My shoes are based upon my favorite band Twenty One Pilots, this has been my favorite band since middle school. Twenty one pilots is very expressive within their music and visuals from albums, t-shirt designs, and music videos. I focused on similar color shades and patterns. I used most patterns from album covers and made them in my own way to help make the design my own but still make it look like a design from one of the albums. I used a mix of sharpies and another permanent marker(ArtsMinds) that had both a fine tip and thick tip. I did use a pencil for bigger figures within the piece to help create an outline. To prevent bleeding from the sharpie I used a lighter grip on the media and surface of the shoe. My goal as an artist is to try different media’s and surfaces within my works. I was able to do so with this project. In some areas I challenged myself not to use a outline such as the pencil outline technique. This caused me to be more focused and aware of my composition. I definitely was able to execute my vision and I am happy with how it turned out. It took a lot of time and focus and it was super fun to create artwork on a shoe.

For my scratch board assignment I decided to do a Blue whale. Blue
whales were on the brink of extinction in the early 1900’s due to
commercial whaling. They are currently growing more in the population
after they were put under a protection act against commercial whaling.
I found this very interesting and it gained a spark of inspiration for
this project. I also wanted to incorporate the migration process and
how whales typically stick together. I then created a mother and a
baby whale drawing of blue whales. I cut these drawings out to have an
outline while beginning the assignment.  I also used a pencil to help
guide my workings. While doing this I messed up and used an eraser,
this created a smoggy appearance that distracted a lot from the work.
I then added water and currents within the image which actually helped
take way from that mistake. This assignment was different from
anything I have done before. It surprisingly went by fast but took a
lot of precision and clear marks to get the look I wanted for the
outcome. I have never worked with scratch board before so it was a
completely new media for me to use. I overall enjoyed this project and
will be looking forward to working with scratch board more.

Figure drawing was probably one of the most challenging pieces that I worked on this year. I’m not very good at drawing humans so it was a challenge. Using the charcoal was also definitely challenging for me because I have never used that media before. I am more use to drawing on paper with pencil so it was definitely very different. Figure drawing is very in depth and hard to get realistic features. I also really enjoyed this piece because I did learn a lot of new techniques from this assignment. Figure drawing is very fast so it was hard for me to get really in depth realistic pieces. I definitely liked this challenge,I was able to refresh my drawing with the eyes and noes from the packet. I found that it was easier for me to draw figures with a regular pencil and paper. I also found a challenge in drawing the hands and feet, but I feel like I was able to make them look pretty realistic. Drawing human characteristics has never been my favorite thing to do but I really enjoyed getting out of my comfort zone and trying new media’s and features to draw. I was able to learn a lot from this assignment as well so I’m very happy overall with the new ways and techniques I learned. I am excited to keep practicing with figure drawing to hopefully get to a more detailed piece in the future.
